Wonky Layers and Gold Accents: A Bold Art Journal Spread
There’s nothing quite like the excitement of starting a new art journal. The blank pages are filled with endless possibilities, waiting to be transformed into something magical. In my latest YouTube video, I dive into the very first spread of my handmade art journal, creating a dynamic and colorful half-circle design across two pages. With rich, wonky layers, creative mark-making, and shimmering gold accents, this spread sets the tone for the rest of my journal—and I’m thrilled to share the process with you!
The Inspiration Behind This Spread
I often find inspiration in color palettes, and for this spread, I turned to the Color Cube for guidance. The combination of deep purples, warm golds, and earthy browns felt like the perfect way to create something both bold and harmonious. Using Masha’s watercolors, I built up layers of color, allowing the paint to flow organically and create a sense of movement across the pages.
Mark-making played a huge role in adding texture and interest to the composition. With acrylic markers, watercolor crayons, and a bit of intuitive doodling, I was able to break up the space and add elements of surprise to the design. And of course, what’s an art journal page without a touch of gold? The metallic accents add that extra bit of magic, catching the light and bringing everything together.
Tips for Creating Your Own Layered Art Journal Spread
Start with a Strong Color Palette – Choosing colors that complement each other will give your spread a cohesive and striking look.
Embrace the Wonky Layers – Let go of perfection! Uneven, organic shapes add character and depth to your composition.
Experiment with Mark-Making – Try using different tools like acrylic markers, watercolor crayons, or even the back of a paintbrush to create unique textures.
Don’t Be Afraid to Add Metallic Accents – A little shimmer can make your page pop and create stunning focal points.
Have Fun and Trust the Process – Art journaling is all about self-expression. Let your intuition guide you and enjoy the journey!
