Smoky & Soulful – Making Art with My Handmade Graphite Watercolors
In this abstract painting tutorial, I’m using my handmade graphite watercolors to create a series of concentric circles inside squares — one of my favorite mixed media techniques.
These smoky, moody watercolors bring such beautiful depth and texture to the page. After laying down the base layers, I finish each piece with intuitive mark making for that signature expressive touch.
If you love watercolor, mark making, or exploring new ways to use handmade art supplies, this video is for you. Watch the full process and get inspired to create your own graphite-infused abstract art!
Looking for the supplies I used? I’ve listed all my favorite and most-used materials on one easy-to-update page here: https://2lilowls.com/favorite-supplies-for-mixed-media-abstract-art/
(Some of the links are affiliate links. If you use my link, I get a small commission, which will go toward my art supplies and to support this channel! I appreciate your support!!)
Note: I don’t list individual supply links on every post any longer, simply because keeping up with that for each video or project took more time than I have. Instead, I’ve created one easy-to-browse page where I’ve listed all my favorite and most-used art supplies. It’s always up to date, and a great place to find what I’m working with most often.

These are gorgeous! I saw your video where you made them and I thought that I should do that. I just have liquid graphite, though, and I don’t know if that would work. I’ll have to get brave and try it!
Thank you! I think liquid graphite would be fun to try. I would think it would react about the same way as when you mixed them with the watercolors. I don’t know if you could mix it and then let it dry in pans and have it reactivate. Depends on what that binder is in the liquid graphite.
Love watching you paint. I’ve never painted and this inspires me so much to just dive in and have fun. I have made your photography boards and loved the process, and the results. It was a surprise to me to have such a good time. Painting may be the same.
Thanks.
I’m so glad you had fun making the photography boards! That little surprise of enjoying the process is such a good reason to give painting a try too. Start with a few colors and let yourself play, I’d love for you to discover that same enjoyment on paper.
