Description
This workshop is a collection of Graphite Watercolor classes I’ve done. I’ve become obsessed with Graphite Watercolors – which are basically watercolor paints with graphite powder mixed in. They create a beautiful smoky quality with a slight metallic sheen. We will do some fun project painting with them and I’ll show you how to make some of your own. I hope you enjoy this collection with an art supply that is definitely up there as some of my favorites to play in! Check out the videos below to see what each class in this series is about!
Graphite Abstracts – Create Sophisticated Abstracts With Gansai Tambi Graphite Pans
In this class, I am going to be working with a new product – Gansai Tambi Graphite Pans… these work like watercolors – and they offer deep, tranquil colors with a rich matte texture and a graphite finish. You can softly burnish the colors to bring up the metallic sheen. They are so cool and sophisticated looking. I truly got excited to use them and the results I got with the. (I get the Sketchbox Art Box every month and this was a product they sent and I truly loved!)
We are going to create some beautiful abstracts with the Graphite Pans and some Water Soluble Art Graf pencils. I’ve kept the supplies super simple in this case because I wanted to art materials to shine without too much fluff going along with them and I was totally thrilled with how these turned out! I think you’ll really love creating some of these and working with the graphite in new ways. (You can substitute any of your water-soluble pencils and watercolors for this project too if you want to work with what you have on hand.)
Graphite Watercolor – Making Your Own Graphite Watercolors from Graphite Powder And Pigments
In this class, I am going to show you how easy it is to make your own graphite watercolor paints. Many artists find it fun and satisfying to create their own paints to use in their art, me included. Making paint is all about the creative process for me. It is all about exploring, experimenting, and the trials and errors you’ll encounter along the way. It is these processes that help up grow as artists in our own unique ways.
I love Graphite Watercolors because they have a wonderful smoky quality and the cool metallic sheen of graphite.
Why make your own paint? Well… besides just wanting to and pushing yourself creativity… I like how you have complete control over what is going into your paint. Have any chemical sensitivities? This is the perfect way to ensure you can use ingredients you aren’t going to react to. ALSO… since graphite watercolors are a new product… you may not have access to the few colors they make, or maybe you want more variety in the colors – so making some for yourself solves both of these issues!
Fun Graphite Watercolor Abstracts – Revisiting Favorite Techniques With New Supplies
In this class, I am going to be working some more with my Gansai Tambi Graphite Pans, and some of the graphite watercolors I made (You can check out making some graphite watercolors yourself in my graphite watercolor class)… these work like watercolors – and they offer deep, tranquil colors with a rich matte texture and a graphite finish.
I’m a bit obsessed with these graphite watercolors and wanted to play and have some fun at my art table, so in this class, I am revisiting some of my favorite projects and doing them with some new supplies. I’ll also show you some fun bookmarks I made with a delightful surprise on the back. I know you’ll have fun with these projects.
Simplicity – Elegant Graphite Watercolor Abstracts And Botanicals
In this class, I am going to be working with Gansai Tambi Graphite Pans and some Graphite Watercolors I created in the Make Your Own Graphite Watercolor class… these work like watercolors – and they offer deep, tranquil colors with a rich matte texture and a graphite finish. You can softly burnish the colors to bring up the metallic sheen. They are so cool and sophisticated looking. I truly got excited to use them and the results I got.
We will create some beautiful abstracts with the Graphite Pans and some Water Soluble Art Graf pencils. We’ll start by creating some elegant Leaf paintings, then some abstract florals, some stripes, and abstracts… and then we’ll do some a bit bigger. You are welcome to substitute other watercolors you have on hand to try out the projects – but you won’t have the same effects the graphite colors are giving us due to the really cool repelling effect we get when using water-soluble pencils on the graphite watercolors.
Floral Fields – Create Enchanting Landscapes with Watercolor and Pastels
In this class, I am going to be creating some dreamy fields of flower landscapes. We’ll be experimenting with watercolors to create our landscapes and mark-making with pastels to create flowers… (you can switch up the things you mark make with to add some variety and experiment with your supplies. I recommend you try soft pastels, oil pastels, pastel pencils, Neocolor II crayons, colored pencils, etc… the possibilities are endless.
I’ll be using some of my handmade Graphite watercolors in class since I’m still obsessed with them and want to give them a play with different projects. You can check out making some graphite watercolors yourself in my graphite watercolor class… these work like watercolors – and they offer deep, tranquil colors with a rich matte texture and a graphite finish.
Fluid Graphite Abstracts – Experimenting With Fluid Graphite and Water Soluble Graphite Sticks
In this class, I am going to be sharing some new art products to play with. Sometimes I want to do a class just to share new supplies with you. The Fluid Graphite and the graphite sticks are just such products! One of our lovely students shared the fluid graphite with me and I knew I had to check it out since I am currently obsessed with graphite in my art and supplies.
When you get a new art supply to play with, I encourage you to immediately open it up and start experimenting with it. In class, we’ll do some testing to see how these work, then we’ll create some small abstracts to really give them a go. When I get new supplies I love to revisit my favorite projects and techniques so I don’t get stuck looking at a white paper and freeze up not knowing what to create.
These classes are for you if:
- You love learning new techniques for your art
- You are interested in abstract watercolor painting and the Graphite Watercolor sounds interesting
- You love experimenting with art supplies
- You love watching how others approach their painting practice
Supplies:
These are the supplies I’ll be using in most of these classes… definitely get creative and experiment if you have some other supplies or ideas that come to you as you go through the class.
- Canson XL 140lb cold-press watercolor paper. You are welcome to experiment on any of the watercolor papers you already have on hand for these projects.
- Kuretake Gansai Tambi Graphite Pans – I am also using some custom graphite watercolors I made in class from the make-your-own graphite watercolor class.
- Art Graft Water-Soluble Graphite Pencils – the set I have has 2b and 6b in it. I prefer the 6B and mostly use it in class. I also test a few other mark-making pencils – I think you’ll like seeing some other options when you watch this video.
- Watercolor brush – I’m using the Raphael soft aqua brush in sizes 0 and 2 in class.
