My favorite temporary bonding agent
I wanted to share with you one of my very favorite – behind the scenes – items I just can’t live without.
Museum Wax…
Have you ever heard of it?
Ever used it?
It is the most fabulous product for temporarily securing things that you don’t want to damage, but need to stay put for a photo. I use it for flower setups, still life setups, and so much more.
This is the stuff museums use to tack frames on the wall after they are hung to keep them from moving, and not damage their walls when they take the frames down. You could also tack down delicate things to shelves to keep them from moving or falling. This stuff has so many uses.
For photography – I like to tack things in place for a bit so things don’t move. For today’s shoot, I wanted to tack a decoration onto my antique leather shoes without damaging them. This was perfect for getting the exact look and feel I wanted without gluing or sewing something to the leather. When I was done – I just pulled the decoration off, gathered the wax up, and put it back into the container to use again.
The container I have is WAY TOO BIG! I didn’t realize how large 13oz was going to be – so I’ll have this container til I die… I recommend you get a 1 or 2 oz container – that will be plenty for a long while for you if you decide to try this magical stuff out for your photos sets!

I discovered Museum Wax when I was reading a book on food photography and the photographer described how she used it set up the props to get everything in just the right place and keep them there, for example, a tilted plate with silverware. I use it all the time now for still life set-ups. It doesn’t leave marks or stains and it’s reusable. And you’re right, a little goes a long way. I’ve using the same small jar for two years and I have most of it left.
It really is fantastic stuff! 🙂
This is new to me! Would you have a recommendation to find it locally? I’m guessing it’s only available online. Thanks for the tip and I’d love to check it out.
I had to find it online. I don’t even know who would stock this product. 🙂
