Layering Color & Texture in Abstract Art – A Mixed Media Painting Demo
In this video, I’m creating a set of two expressive abstract paintings inspired by the colors and dynamic marks of one of my Kandinsky master study paintings.
Using Masha’s vibrant watercolors as a base, I layer in rich textures with NeoColor II pastels, graphite, and touches of shimmering gold. You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at my full mixed media process—from loose, intuitive color washes to bold, intentional mark-making.
Whether you're an abstract art lover or looking for new inspiration in your creative practice, this tutorial invites you to explore color, composition, and freedom on the page.

Looking for the supplies I used? I’ve listed all my favorite and most-used materials on one easy-to-update page here: https://2lilowls.com/favorite-supplies-for-mixed-media-abstract-art/
(Some of the links are affiliate links. If you use my link, I get a small commission, which will go toward my art supplies and to support this channel! I appreciate your support!!)
Note: I don’t list individual supply links on every post any longer, simply because keeping up with that for each video or project took more time than I have. Instead, I’ve created one easy-to-browse page where I’ve listed all my favorite and most-used art supplies. It’s always up to date, and a great place to find what I’m working with most often.
