Art journal spread with abstract turquoise and orange paintings and title text for a Color Cube dominant color experiment.

How I Use the Color Cube in My Art Journal | Dominant Color Experiment

Today I’m back in my Bare Spine Beauty journal, continuing to fill the pages in the handmade book I created in class.

For this spread, I’m using color palettes from the Color Cube, but I’m changing one big thing on purpose: I’m making a different dominant color on each abstract to see how the exact same palette behaves when the balance shifts. I also taped off two different sizes to add more interest to the overall composition of the book pages, because I love when a journal spread feels playful and unexpected.

Along the way I’m layering Holbein gouache, Kingart gel crayons, NeoColor II pastels, graphite, Faber-Castell Black Collection pencils, tempera sticks, and Posca pens for lots of mark making and texture.

If you’re curious about color palette practice, abstract mark-making, and how I build layered pages inside my art journals, this one’s for you.

Looking for the supplies I used? I’ve listed all my favorite and most-used materials on one easy-to-update page here: https://2lilowls.com/favorite-supplies-for-mixed-media-abstract-art/

(Some of the links are affiliate links. If you use my link, I get a small commission, which will go toward my art supplies and to support this channel! I appreciate your support!!)

Note: I don’t list individual supply links on every post any longer, simply because keeping up with that for each video or project took more time than I have. Instead, I’ve created one easy-to-browse page where I’ve listed all my favorite and most-used art supplies. It’s always up to date, and a great place to find what I’m working with most often.
