Holbein Granulating Watercolors: First Impressions, Swatches & Abstract Art
Join me for a relaxing swatching session as I explore the new Holbein granulating watercolor collection! In this video, I turn these dreamy tube paints into a custom half pan set, swatch each color to reveal their gorgeous granulation effects, and wrap things up by painting a soothing abstract piece using concentric circles.
Whether you're a mixed media artist, watercolor lover, or just curious about how these unique pigments perform on paper, this is the perfect video to spark your creative play. Grab your tea and come paint with me!
Looking for the supplies I used? I’ve listed all my favorite and most-used materials on one easy-to-update page here: https://2lilowls.com/favorite-supplies-for-mixed-media-abstract-art/
(Some of the links are affiliate links. If you use my link, I get a small commission, which will go toward my art supplies and to support this channel! I appreciate your support!!)
Note: I don’t list individual supply links on every post any longer, simply because keeping up with that for each video or project took more time than I have. Instead, I’ve created one easy-to-browse page where I’ve listed all my favorite and most-used art supplies. It’s always up to date, and a great place to find what I’m working with most often.

Hi, Denise. I was introduced to your work a couple of months ago and am now obsessed! I considered myself to be a “crafter” and had no idea that I could actually create “art”. Being VERY new to the watercolor medium, I wasn’t sure how to use the watercolor tubes that I recently purchased so this was a very timely video so that I could see how you transferred the tube paint to the pans and created the color swatches. My new pans and box are now on their way from Amazon! Thanks!
Hi! That makes me so happy to hear and welcome to watercolor. I love that shift from thinking of yourself as a crafter to realizing you are absolutely making art. Those tubes can feel mysterious at first so I am really glad the timing helped and that you got to see how I move the paint into pans and play with swatches. It is such a fun part of the process. Your new setup is going to feel so good to use and I cannot wait for you to explore with it. Thanks so much for being here and enjoy every messy colorful minute!
Hi Denise! I love this video! The colors you used are great!! It’s interesting seeing what the Hobein Granulating watercolors can do. Reminds me a lot of the Marsha’s wc paints that I love so much! I may have to invest in the Hobein set now too!!
Thanks so much for sharing these videos with us – it has opened my eyes to the many possibilities of watercolors – beyond painting a boring “landscape” that I never seemed to get right!! Now my paint-days are awesome and sooooo much more fun!! Thanks to you!
Thank you so much for this sweet comment! I am so happy these videos have helped you see watercolor in a whole new way and made your paint days more fun. That really means the world to me. And yes, those Holbein granulating colors are so much fun to play with and I totally get the comparison. I love how they create those beautiful unexpected textures. So glad you’re here painting along with me!
