My biggest business mistake…
I’ll bet you are wondering what that could possibly be, aren’t you?
I’m going to put you out of your misery quickly…
My biggest mistake I have made in my business is…
NOT BUILDING MY EMAIL LIST FROM DAY 1!
That’s it. I didn’t start building my email list from the very beginning. I didn’t even begin focusing on it strongly until around the 4th year of my business. And that is a huge problem. I could have actually been so much further along than I am if I had been 100% focused on that one asset from day one.
And don’t get me wrong… I’m doing pretty good, but I could have possibly been doing even better if I had a list that is 10 times bigger than it is! It is that significant.
What did I focus on instead?
Building my Facebook following – which is also very important for social proof – but not nearly as important as growing your own list.
Facebook is owned by someone else!
Building your business on real-estate that you are basically renting is dangerous…
You don’t own your Facebook pages…
They can be taken away from you anytime…
Or the algorithms can change and then no one can see your business!
What would you do if one day you had a thriving business and the next day it was gone…
And there was nothing you could do about it?
Building your business on the back of another business might as well be compared to building your business on a quicksand base – eventually, you are going to sink. The reason these platforms gain popularity is that they start out free. It is intoxicating to start building your business on their platforms and seeing such fantastic results for very little investment. Then as these platforms grow – they begin to look for ways to cut your growth and build their revenue by charging you to reach your people.
It happens every time.
They offer something amazing…
Get hugely popular…
Then they change the rules to figure out how to monetize.
Which is a fantastic model for you to study and apply to your own business!
The kiss of death on these platforms is when they start the algorithms… a system that is great for them… but basically means they are about to restrict your reach!
How can you bulletproof yourself from losing your business because another business changes the rules?
By building your business on real estate you own. Things that no one else can take away from you.
- Have your own website.
- Have your own email list and start building it on day one!
- Use the social platforms to further your goals but not rely on them for all of your business.
The people who sign up to your email list are your biggest fans. These are the people who love you most and can’t wait to see what you are coming up with. These are the people who will be most likely to purchase from you going forward.
Your email list is your single biggest money making tool that you own – so don’t skimp out – start building up your tribe from day one!!
And a word to the wise…
Don’t be offended if someone unsubscribes from your list. You are paying for the number of people you have on your list – so you only want those people who really want to be there. The ones that leave weren’t your ideal customer anyway – so you want them to scrub themselves off your list!
