Finding your voice…

How do you do that?

This one was a bit harder for me, and something I see creatives struggle with all the time.

How do you create an original, authentic brand that sounds like you want it to sound? When you are just starting out – you might not even know what that sound is. I know I didn’t. I was just an overworked slightly desperate kitchen designer who wanted to change the direction of my whole life and didn’t know what that direction was.

One thing about the internet – is that it has opened up so many doors for so many people that didn’t even exist before. When I was coming out of school – the internet was in its infancy. No one knew where it was going or what it was capable of. We didn’t learn how to use it or what it could do. Heck… I was lucky I chose to take typing (on a real typewriter since computers were not in our schools at the time either), thinking I’d never use it, but it looked like the best choice for an elective at the time versus some of the other choices I had. That is the class I am most thankful for now since I type every single day!! Can you imagine having a blog and being a henpecking typer? Me either!

So what can you do to find your voice?

I’d recommend blogging. What better way than to begin putting your thoughts into words and as a side benefit begin building some SEO for your site? I have discovered that you grow into your voice with practice. Just like you find your style – lots and lots of practice.

By starting your blogging early in your business – you will begin to develop your style, honing your voice, and as time goes on – maturing the way you write and present yourself. Putting your thoughts and opinions down gives your audience a chance to get to know you. What you think. What you believe. What your expertise is. It gives your audience a look into the person behind the brand you are building.

Defining and finding your voice is a skill you can refine with a bit of time and practice.

Start early.

Blog often.

Shift directions as you need to.

You can do this.
