Color Palette Play in My Bare Spine Beauty Journal | Abstracts With the Color Cube
Today I’m filling pages in my Bare Spine Beauty journal that I made in class, and I’m using color palettes from my Color Cube as the jumping-off point for two abstract paintings.
I wanted to see what would happen when I used the same palette in different ways, so I made the dominant color different on each page and let the supporting colors play a smaller role. Along the way I’m layering Holbein gouache, Kingart gel crayons, NeoColor II pastels, graphite, Faber-Castell Black Collection pencils, tempera sticks, and Posca pens for lots of mark making and texture.
To add more interest to the spread, I also taped off the abstracts in different sizes so the composition feels a little unexpected and playful. If you love art journaling, abstract watercolor, mixed media layers, and simple color palette prompts that make creating easier, come paint with me.

Looking for the supplies I used? I’ve listed all my favorite and most-used materials on one easy-to-update page here: https://2lilowls.com/favorite-supplies-for-mixed-media-abstract-art/
(Some of the links are affiliate links. If you use my link, I get a small commission, which will go toward my art supplies and to support this channel! I appreciate your support!!)
Note: I don’t list individual supply links on every post any longer, simply because keeping up with that for each video or project took more time than I have. Instead, I’ve created one easy-to-browse page where I’ve listed all my favorite and most-used art supplies. It’s always up to date, and a great place to find what I’m working with most often.
