Color Palette Play in My Art Journal | Dominant Color Experiment + Texture
In today’s session, I’m back in my Bare Spine Beauty journal and continuing to fill the pages with layered abstract paintings inspired by the Color Cube.
I’m using one palette across multiple pages, but changing the dominant color in each abstract to see how the same colors behave when I let a different one take the lead. To add more movement and interest in the composition, I tape off different sizes and shapes so the abstracts land differently across the spread.
I’m layering Holbein gouache, Faber-Castell Black Collection pencils, Kuretake silver ink in a fine line bottle, a Pandafly white pen, and Posca pens for lots of mark making, texture, and little details that bring the pages to life.
If you love art journaling, color palette play, and mixed media layering, come paint along with me and let’s explore how a limited palette can create totally different moods on the page.

Looking for the supplies I used? I’ve listed all my favorite and most-used materials on one easy-to-update page here: https://2lilowls.com/favorite-supplies-for-mixed-media-abstract-art/
(Some of the links are affiliate links. If you use my link, I get a small commission, which will go toward my art supplies and to support this channel! I appreciate your support!!)
Note: I don’t list individual supply links on every post any longer, simply because keeping up with that for each video or project took more time than I have. Instead, I’ve created one easy-to-browse page where I’ve listed all my favorite and most-used art supplies. It’s always up to date, and a great place to find what I’m working with most often.
