Building Layers in Abstract Art with Acrylic Inks & Oil Pastels
Inspired by my last abstract painting session, I couldn't resist diving back in with acrylic inks, Neo Color II pastels, Mungyo oil pastels, and graphite to create two more layered, expressive pieces.
In this video, I’ll walk you through my intuitive mixed media painting process—showing how I build depth with loose color washes, soft mark making, and a playful mix of materials.
Whether you're new to abstract art or looking for fresh ideas to combine your favorite supplies, you'll find plenty of inspiration here. Grab your inks and pastels, and let’s create together!
Looking for the supplies I used? I’ve listed all my favorite and most-used materials on one easy-to-update page here: https://2lilowls.com/favorite-supplies-for-mixed-media-abstract-art/
(Some of the links are affiliate links. If you use my link, I get a small commission, which will go toward my art supplies and to support this channel! I appreciate your support!!)
Note: I don’t list individual supply links on every post any longer, simply because keeping up with that for each video or project took more time than I have. Instead, I’ve created one easy-to-browse page where I’ve listed all my favorite and most-used art supplies. It’s always up to date, and a great place to find what I’m working with most often.

You are such a happy and creative person, Denise. I enjoy watching and listening to you while you are having fun. I especially appreciate learning from you and every class I’ve purchased. Using the gold in a Fineliner is the best! Lovely abstract, so thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much! I’m thrilled you’ve been enjoying the classes and having fun learning along with me. That gold in a Fineliner really is such a magical little touch!
I really need to thank you again for your inspiring videos. After about a year’s hiatus being ill, I became discouraged and quit painting. After renewing your video watching, I have started painting again. Thank you so much for sharing your journey with us. Getting my supplies out again and getting organized once more, has really helped me cope with things like scary diagnoses and such. I have something fun and exciting to look forward to each day.
My best
This means so much to me, and I’m truly glad the videos helped you find your way back to painting. Getting your supplies out and giving yourself something joyful to look forward to each day is such a beautiful gift, especially while carrying so much. I’m sending you lots of love as you keep creating and taking things one painting at a time!
Your work sets me freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee wheeeeeeeeeeee
That makes me so happy to hear! I love that creating along with me gives you that feeling of freedom and play. Wheeeeeeeeeeee right along with you!
Denise,
Thank you for your generosity. In sharing your talent, you have encouraged me to expand my visual world. I enjoy and get inspiration from your videos. You have opened my eyes to color, intuitive painting, and mark making – which I now incorporate in my collages. You’re the best!
Thank you so much for telling me this. I love hearing that color, intuitive painting, and mark-making have found their way into your collages. It makes me happy to know our time creating together has encouraged you to explore more.
