Behind the scenes Orchid setup

I got some beautiful flowers from Farmgirl flowers to work with today… and it had some beautiful Orchids in the arrangement. I’ve not gotten lucky enough to get any with orchids before – so I was pretty excited to give them a go on a setup at my window. This has been my favorite source for flowers during the pandemic this year. Always pretty arrangements with lots of pretties to photograph.

In the video below, I’m showing you my setup and my thoughts as I move things around. All of the photos in this set below the video were edited with the Seasons FW preset collection.

This is a setup inspired by my new Blooming Flower workshop. If you love some of the ideas I’m using here, you’ll love all the ideas I have for you in the workshop. This advanced flower workshop will really get your creativity flowing!

I hope you enjoy this behind the scenes look at my setup and the photos I took. I am only using the window light and some studio lights to supplement the light since it was dark and rainy. I have all the lights in the room off – so they don’t change or mess up my light in the photos.

Hi Denise,I’m Dominique from Brisbane Australia. My photography journey started quite a while ago, actually with fims…which I still use time to time, then since 2010 I’ve started digital photography, first with landscape and then newborn and family photography. early this year I closed my studio and shut down my website, wich was sad and emotional. Anyway, now I’m spending my time learning water colour paintingand just ressentely I’v discovered your website and I really love your work. I’ve just watched your video about the orchids, absolutely stunning.
Again my camera is out and I’m so glade I have keeped all my props from my studio, because I’ll be able to use a few of them experimenting botanical photography.
Thank you for your inspiration and your help by showing us your work.

This is the perfect time to experiment with little studio photography and botanicals since we are all stuck at home so much. So glad you have some props you can pull out and play with! Good luck 🙂

What stick light and ring light do you use? They seem to to a very nice job!

They do great. I have an 18” Neewer ring light and an Opteka hand held light wand.

Hi Denise, thank you for the beautiful video of the orchids, May I ask you what lens you used on that project? I have a lens baby velvet 56 and some other beautiful lenses, I love the softness of your images, I seem to struggle with my lens baby, I don’t always get the desired outcome.

So glad you found the video helpful. I was using the Lensbaby velvet 56. It took a bit of practice for me early on to really get used to the manual lenses and find my grove, but now that lens practically lives on my camera. I love the velvety feel that lens gives the photo so much. 🙂
