Behind the Art: 2 Abstract Mixed Media Pieces from Start to Finish
In this abstract art video, I’ll walk you through the creation of two richly layered mixed media pieces inspired by our 12-piece sampler collection.
Using a harmonious color palette pulled from The Color Cube, I began with washes of Masha’s handmade watercolors, then built up depth with several layers of stenciling using Blick matte acrylics. To top it off, I added expressive mark-making and a shimmering damask stencil detail with Kuretake Gold Mica Ink.
If you love exploring texture, color, and creative play in your art, you’ll find tons of inspiration and technique tips in this process video. Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more abstract and mixed media goodness!
Looking for the supplies I used? I’ve listed all my favorite and most-used materials on one easy-to-update page here: https://2lilowls.com/favorite-supplies-for-mixed-media-abstract-art/
(Some of the links are affiliate links. If you use my link, I get a small commission, which will go toward my art supplies and to support this channel! I appreciate your support!!)
Note: I don’t list individual supply links on every post any longer, simply because keeping up with that for each video or project took more time than I have. Instead, I’ve created one easy-to-browse page where I’ve listed all my favorite and most-used art supplies. It’s always up to date, and a great place to find what I’m working with most often.

I was so so inspired by seeing the first 12 small art pieces that you did and immediately jumped at seeing these wonderful larger pieces!!! OMG, was I smitten at these!!!! I havn’t painted in over maybe 12. years and I alwaysLOVED to paint but never explored the abstract side of it…well after seeing your wonderful pieces I tried to find all my watercolor and acrylic stuff, decobwebbed it all and went to work….I’m now after about 12 practice grids, I’m going to attempt two larger pieces I want to fram to flank the two sides of my front door…I’ll let you know! Thank you so very much for your gentle and straightforward, enthusiastic tutorials…I enjoy each and every one of them!!! – Rosie
Rosie, this makes me so happy to read! I love that the little grids inspired you to dust off your paints after so many years—that’s such a beautiful return to creativity. I’m so excited you’re planning larger pieces for your front door, what a perfect way to welcome people into your home. Please do let me know how they turn out, I’d love to hear! Thank you for your kind words, I’m so glad you’re here painting with me again.
