Art Play in a Handmade Journal: Watercolor & Reverse Stenciling
In this video, I’m breaking in one of my newly made Coptic-bound journals with a fun watercolor session using Masha’s beautiful handmade watercolors and a Stencil Girl Stencil Club design. I explore a reverse stenciling technique—where instead of adding color through the stencil, I lift it off—to reveal bold, layered text and shapes beneath the paint. It was a blast experimenting on these textured pages, and I loved seeing how the handmade watercolor paper handled the color and lifting. Come hang out while I paint, chat about the process, and give this new journal its first creative marks!

Dear Denise. I’m very grateful to have come across your YouTube videos a while back when I was struggling to be creative at all and thought any capacity I had as an artist was gone, taken by life circumstance and chronic illness. As an art school graduate this was extremely difficult for me to contemplate. Your freedom to explore materials and ideas with fluidity and fun was a real eye opener for me. Focusing on the process rather than the final outcome was a stark reminder of who I was and so desperately want back. I’ve stopped beating myself up so much and have started making marks again for no reason at all apart from I enjoy it, it fuels my heart & soul & it helps me process daily life dealing with chronic and complex health issues. With great gratitude, heartfelt thanks and appreciation … currently punching hearts for prompts
Thank you so much for sharing this with me. Your words truly touched my heart. I’m so glad my videos helped rekindle that creative spark and reminded you of the joy that comes from simply making marks. Art has such a quiet power to hold us through life’s hardest seasons, and I’m honored to be a small part of your journey back to it. Keep punching those hearts—you’re not alone.
