Nothing like some pretty roses to ring in the spring.  I spotted these pretty little ones while out on the hunt for the Iris’.  Most roses are not out yet – so it was with delight that I stumbled upon this pretty little bush.

I took the photo into Lightroom and used Dreamy Matte preset 4 and cropped the photo.

Then I took the photo into Photoshop and added Cahoots texture 25. Making it off slightly from the flower.

Decided to go a little different with the coloring in this beautiful Iris. Wanted a more vintage feel so I kept that in mind as I was choosing the Lightroom preset and texture.

I took the photo into Lightroom and cropped it a little bit and added Dreamy Matte preset 23.

I then took it into Photoshop and added Spring Paints texture 19 at 100% Softlight. I desaturated the color in the texture slightly also.

How delicious are the colors in this?  I try to pay a lot of attention to the background when photographing flowers. I now take them from many angles – judging the background in each one before I settle on my favorite. I know I am successful when I am out shooting and I get really excited about the colors I found behind the subject on my viewfinder.

Original shot straight out of camera (Or crooked as the case may be – I think I was practically standing on my head to get this shot – so I went with it and straightened it in photoshop)

I took the photo into Lightroom and used Beautifully Luxe preset 13

Then I took the photo into Photoshop and added Enigmatic 1 at 100% softlight. I softly masked some of the texture off the main part of the flower.

I am in awe of all the varieties I was able to catch during 1 visit to Oakland, Yes – Oakland Cemetery – where during the middle/end of April you can wonder around and catch a huge variety blooming all over the place!

This is the original photo straight out of camera

IMG_0020

I took the photo into Lightroom and added Beautifully Luxe Lightroom preset 11. I also cloned out the dark spot in the lower right corner.

Then I took the photo into photoshop and added 2 textures:

The textures I added were

Adventurer 2 at 56% softlight

Adventurer 4 at 76% softlight

I did a little masking on the flower to remove some of the textures off the main part of the flower.

These collection are only available to people in the texture club. You can check out the texture club here: http://2lilowlstextureclub.com/

Working on a few more of these beautiful Iris photos. On this photo I just used 1 texture, but it really adds just that little extra something that only a texture can do. This is why I love working with textures – to get just a little bit more from my photos.

Original photo straight out of camera:

IMG_9995

I brought the photo into Lightroom and applied the Dreamy Matte preset 33 and cropped the photo to a square.

IMG_9995-2_1

Then I brought the photo into Photoshop and added the texture Cahoots 13 at 100% softlight. I also masked a tiny bit of the texture off the center of the flower.

What is more beautiful than the spring flowers blooming. A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to get to photograph 20 million Daffodils and today I went on the hunt for the Iris.  I’m not sure how nature can create something so beautiful. The Iris is truly a work of art with all of the colors and textures they come in.

Here is the original photo I started with straight out of Camera:

IMG_9925

I took the photo into Lightroom and used Beautifully Luxe Lightroom preset 13 and cropped it into a square. This really made the color beautiful and enhanced the lighting.

IMG_9925-2ps_2

I then took the photo into Photoshop and added 2 textures:

IMG_9925-2ps_3

The textures I added:

Adornment 2 at 94% Softlight

Magnifique 25 at 62% Softlight

Both of these collections are hand painted canvas collections. I left the color toning that the Adornment texture added – warming up the photo slightly. I love the authenticity that a hand painted collection can add to your art.

I love when the seasons change. When we go from Winter to Spring and the trees begin to wake from their long slumber.  I recently went in search of the blossoms and was not disappointed.

*Used Carousel Lightroom preset 23 on this collection to achieve a cohesive look. Find this collection here: http://2lilowls.com/carousel-lightroom-presets/

Yellow flowers make the most beautiful black and white photos I think. I took these a few weeks ago when the daffodils were in full bloom. I love going up to the gardens where these are. Twenty million of them all out and shinning at the same time through the forest and over the hills. Such a site to behold.

*I used the Dreamy BW Lightroom Preset 1 on this entire collection to get this wonderful color. You can find them here: http://2lilowls.com/dreamy-blackwhite-lightroom-presets/

Water drops can be amazing. I know that out in nature if you can find some water drops on a flower, then it is a more interesting subject than just the plain flower sometimes. Some people do fantastic water splash photography also or you could use a macro lens and catch a scene through the water drop. The possibilities are endless. You don’t even need a fancy camera to get out and catch some great water drops either – these photos were taken with my phone, using a cheap $20 macro lens for the phone that I got from Photojojo, early in the morning before the dew had dried.

Image Transfer Project

Supplies:

3 antique tea towels,   Images to transfer,   Lesley Ripley’s TAP (Transfer Artist Paper),   Sewing machine and thread (I used a darker thread than my fabric so it would show up and add to the look),   Iron,    Decorative elements you wish to include,   Ribbon/rope for handle, A small piece of pretty cotton fabric for the inside lining.

Photo Oct 07, 12 36 42 PM

To create this fun vintage bag I went to my local antique marker and purchased 3 antique tea towels. Antique linens have such wonderful character built into them, the fabrics are a nice weight to work with and transfer on.

I wanted my finished bag to be large enough for a small wallet and my phone so I made my bag about 8″x9″. You can make your bag any size you want keeping in mind the limitations of the tea towels size.

Photo Oct 06, 2 42 49 PM

Cut a large rectangle for your bag. For mine I cut it at 20″ long so the bottom would be a fold instead of a seam and I cut it about 9″ wide leaving a 1/2″ sewing seam on each side.  Cut out a pocket for the front out of one of the other tea towels. (I had 3 towels I used because they were all slightly different in color, texture, and had decorative elements I wanted to use.) I included some lace from a tea towel for the top edge of my pocket. I also cut a smaller square out of the 3rd tea towel and sewed it on the pocked before I sewed the pocket on the bag. I added a square for a graphic on the back of the bag also which you will see below and finished in the very last photo in this post.

Photo Oct 06, 2 43 03 PM

Next sew the bottom of the pocket to the bag leaving the raw edge out. Make 2-3 passes of the sewing machine and don’t make the lines all straight.  Fold the bag in 1/2 and sew the side seams – you will leave the selvage to the outside adding to the shabby chicness of this bag.

Photo Oct 06, 2 58 39 PM

To create the lining I used a piece of pretty cotton fabric cut the same size as the bag. Sew up the side seams with the right side of the fabric facing in. Sew a small hem at the top to finish off the lining. Insert into the bag and sew the top with 2-3 rows of stitching.

I then added a button on the front and a small lace loop inside the top to loop around the button on front to create the closure and I sewed some rope on the inside to create the handle.

Photo Oct 06, 2 02 40 PM

Lastly I printed the 2 graphic elements I wanted to iron onto my bag and added them onto the squares I created on the bag. Trim the paper closely around your graphic.  (Be sure if you have writing on your graphic then REVERSE it before you print it out!!) The TAP iron on paper is so super simple to use and comes with it’s instructions in the package. This is by far the easiest method of transferring images I have come across.

As a little extra – I frayed all the raw edges around the bag really adding to this fun vintage look.
